"Savory Simon"
If you know who this is, you're either from New Orleans or, like me, just spend WAY too much time there. This is Savory Simon, the patron saint of Hubig's pies, a New Orleans incarnation of Hostess fruit pies. Simon was printed on the crinkly white packaging of every little pie. A few years ago, the Hubig's factory burned down and has not yet been rebuilt. Many New Orleanians viewed that as a dark day in their history. Hubig's came in all kinds of flavors - fruit like apple and cherry, of course, but also chocolate, and they had seasonal pies: blueberry, strawberry, and sweet potato. My first Hubig's was thrown to me at a Mardi Gras parade. It was just what I needed, and I've been a fan ever since. We still have a couple of Hubig's in the freezer. We may never eat them.
